The Cosmic Story: Taurus Solar Eclipse, 2014
Well, our astrological new year started off with a bang, didn’t it? A new birth indeed! During the Sun’s journey in Aries, the world watched as old adversaries squared off again but didn’t go to war; we saw the US Supreme Court pretty much say that money equals free speech; disasters occurred which broke people’s hearts; there was a mystery disappearance; wars continued around the world and in our backyards. When we look at what’s happening in the world, it seems we must keep repeating the same mistakes over again until we all get it.
But that’s the old story, and it’s on its way out of the picture. It’s time for humans to evolve and create a sustainable, peaceful, equal, free global society. This new story is building and growing—we are becoming responsible for our lives and our world. It is a story based on the belief that we are all connected and all part of one Earth. With Neptune inhabiting his own sign of Pisces, the old stories of empire-building, of domination, of individualism and separation are being dissolved back into the collective unconscious for renewal. The World Soul is working on a new story for all of us and for the Earth. We have to stop, stay still and listen so we can hear what that new story is.
The Blood Moon eclipse got plenty of press so that people actually stayed up to watch it. While some religious people saw it as a sign of coming disaster, many others watched it with new eyes that are beginning to appreciate the beauty and mystery of our Earth once again. It seems fitting that the new energies being birth this month waited until the Sun entered the sign of Taurus, the sign most concerned with the Earth and our human stewardship of it.
Taurus—Getting Us Back to the Garden
The Sun entered the sign of Taurus on April 19th, just hours before the Grand Cardinal Cross began to perfect. On Easter Sunday, April 20th, Jupiter in Cancer aligned with Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn. On Monday, April 21st, Uranus and Pluto perfected their 5th square. On Tuesday, April 22nd—Earth Day, Mars retrograde in Libra aligned with Jupiter and on Wednesday, April 23rd, Mars connected with Uranus and Pluto. Click, click, click, click. This womb of transformative energies locked into form a matrix which can energize a new sense of Self-hood within each of us as well as a strong vision for a new society. Read about the Cosmic Grand Cross.
The new story has to be about our relationship with the Earth and each other. The feminine values of relationship, connection and union are the foundation of this new society and new sense of Self. Patriarchy has promoted an ideal of individual self-hood that has lost connection with others and with the Earth. Along with that ideal arose the rejection of feminine values and the devaluing of women and feminine ways of knowing as well as the rape of the Earth. This rejection of the feminine has led to a loss of Wisdom in our society. Sometimes we are sadly lacking in the compassion and wisdom that are basic moral and cosmic laws. That’s why we seem headed for dis-aster, which means ‘going against (dis) the stars (aster)’ or the ordained laws of life.
As we learned to control and use the Earth, we found that we could also control our instinctual nature, and the mind and the ideal of pure spirit became more important than the body and its experience of soul. We removed ourselves from living contact with our Mother Earth: by covering the land over with our cities and roads; by explaining Her mysteries as scientific facts and nothing more; by living in our heads rather than in our bodies. We substituted a one-dimensional observing of life for the wisdom of the experience of life.
Taurus is a fixed earth sign, concerned with the material world and life of the body. Our new story has to include the wisdom that the material world is just as full of spirit and cosmic energy as those ideals of the Mind that have shaped the best aspects of patriarchy. Our task is to find a balanced relationship with matter—with our bodies, with the things we possess and with the environment we live in.
Taurus is a sign that is ruled over
by the Goddess Aphrodite/Venus, whose gifts to us are beauty and joy, sexuality
and the mystery of the body, fertility and growth, connection and peace, love and
wisdom. Very feminine values that need
to be incorporated back into our culture at the most basic levels. We have created an ugly society because we
haven’t valued Aphrodite’s gifts unless we are using them to enhance a
patriarch objective—like ornate casinos in the desert that create an illusion
of comfort as we gamble away our resources for their profit.
During the Sun’s journey through Taurus, Aphrodite entices us to remember the Garden and the possibility of love, joy, beauty and new life.
So it seems only right that we start this cosmic new birth in Taurus, a sign most concerned with the environment (Earth Day is in the beginning of Taurus), with the Earth and with our bodies.
Ancient societies knew that humans are intimately connected with our environment. At the root of all life is our connection to Mother Earth. And yet we live in a society that rejects that wisdom and misuses that gift.
So let’s begin this new creation by taking time every day to find a bit of Earth to be with, communicate with and care for. Whether you live in the city, the country or the desert, you walk on this beautiful Earth, feel the warmth of the Sun’s fires, are blown away by the winds and refreshed by the rains. Re-Connect! Learn to understand the voices of the Earth. Perhaps you can help or heal something. Perhaps you will be healed.
All native people created societies that lived in harmony with the Earth. Our modern society has fallen out of balance with nature and created great dis-harmony with the Earth. Our ice caps are melting and flooding the oceans with cold sweet waters that can disrupt weather patterns around the world. We are poisoning the Earth—her soil, air and waters—for profit and power, laziness and complacency, stupidity and arrogance. Is it any wonder that we can be hypnotized into believing that a corporation, a fictitious legal entity, can be equated with a living, breathing person?
Taurus’ lesson is to teach us how to be good stewards of the Earth and her bounty. The astrological month of Taurus occurs just as the Earth in the northern hemisphere starts to blossom after winter’s sleep. Taurus shows us the beauty and fertility that is Earth’s gift to us if we live within the laws of nature. Taurus shows us the bounty of the Garden to entice us to believe we too are part of the beauty of creation if we take up our role as steward and caretaker of the material world.
What is being birth within the matrix of the comic cross is the evolutionary need for humanity to once again reclaim our place in Earth’s ecology and discover our purpose, to live in harmony with each other and with all of nature and to learn from its wisdom. The Native Americans lived in harmony with the Earth and treasured the wisdom of the Earth. Luther Standing Bear, a Lakota medicine man, wrote:
"The Lakota was a true Naturist - a Lover of Nature. He loved the earth and all things of the earth, the attachment growing with age. The old people came literally to love the soil and they sat or reclined on the ground with a feeling of being close to a mothering power. It was good for the skin to touch the earth and the old people liked to remove their moccasins and walk with bare feet on the sacred earth. Their tipis were built upon the earth and their altars were made of earth. The birds that flew in the air came to rest upon the earth and it was the final abiding place of all things that lived and grew. The soil was soothing, strengthening, cleansing and healing.
That is why the old Indian still sits upon the earth instead of propping himself up and away from its life-giving forces. For him, to sit or lie upon the ground is to be able to think more deeply and to feel more keenly; he can see more clearly into the mysteries of life and come closer in kinship to other lives about him. . . .
Kinship with all creatures of the earth, sky and water was a real and active principle. For the animal and bird world there existed a brotherly feeling that kept the Lakota safe among them and so close did some of the Lakotas come to their feathered and furred friends that in true brotherhood they spoke a common tongue.
old Lakota was wise. He knew that man's
heart away from nature becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing,
living things soon led to lack of respect for humans too. So he kept his youth close to its softening
Taurus also gives us the gift of self-worth and the responsibility to have strong values. What do you value? And what values do you hold sacred? If we are to build (a Taurus activity) something new, we have to build it on values that are strong and secure. One of the troubles with our world is that we aren’t living up to our values and ideals. People talk a good talk, but don’t walk the walk. And so we have a nation, and a world, of hypocrites who want to look bright and shiny on the outside for all the world to see, but who are really living out very negative desires for power, greed, and domination. Until we change our priorities away from economic gain and back to community welfare and global inter-connection, we will fail to change anything. Our values form the basis of an ethical life and the ethical society we all imagine we live in.
If we want to change ourselves, we have to know what our values are and then strive to live them. Love, honesty, courage, courtesy, respect, hope, creativity, knowledge, wisdom, truth, honor, responsibility. These are just a few of the virtues that we need to live out our values, especially if we believe in equality and freedom.
A good Taurus exercise to work with them is to pick one
value and the virtue you have to embody to express it and work on it until it
becomes part of who you are. And then keep
going until you are living your values and exhibiting the virtues you hold
The Taurus Solar Eclipse
This solar eclipse occurs within the womb of the cardinal grand cross and Neptune, Venus and Chiron creating a new story within the collective unconscious—a story of longing for the gifts of love, peace, wisdom and compassion.
The word eclipse comes from the Greek work meaning ‘to leave out, fail or suffer’. It is most closely associated with ‘a failure of the light’. A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon and Earth align as the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, and the light of the Sun dims. This disrupts the energy coming from the Sun and how it affects the web of life here on Earth, rebooting us with a new consciousness. A solar eclipse is an extra powerful new Moon, so plant your seeds with promises of a new connection to nature, to your body and to the interconnection with everyone here on Earth.
Change is always the key to eclipses. So watch to see what changes come your way—even if they seem sudden, they’ve probably been building for some time now. Stay open to the mystery and allow it to happen. A new beginning is indeed upon us.
The eclipse occurs on Monday and Tuesday, April 28th-29th at 11:14pm PDT, 2:14am EDT, 6:14am GMT. This is what is called an annular eclipse, when a narrow rind of the Sun is visible around the dark mass of the Moon. It is visible in Antarctica and the southern most parts of the East.
The Sabian symbol for the Sun and Moon at 9* Taurus is: Thousands of people dancing around a huge Christmas tree.2 This image combines both the spiritual promise of Winter Solstice, and the joy and pleasure of dancing around the May Pole at Beltane. It is a symbol of rituals that honor the Earth and its power to give us life as well as a gathering of like-minded people who share a common spiritual vision that honors the life-force. It symbolizes our basis human need for love, family, community, joy and celebration. The Christmas tree is a symbol of the Tree of Life—a promise that the energy of life is still strong even in the darkest times. The decorations on the Tree symbolize our hopes and wishes and the lights we string upon the Tree symbolize the spiritual Light of the world.
This is a great year to celebrate the power gate of Beltane (May 1-6), the old Celtic festival of the beginning of summer and the season of fertility. We dance around the May Pole to raise the twin masculine and feminine energies of life to weave them into new life for the year, both for the Earth and for ourselves. This year, go out and help our Mother Earth to regenerate us all!
Mercury joins this solar eclipse, helping us develop new ways of thinking about and working with our human nature and Earth’s natural landscapes. Patriarchy has been full of fear of nature—especially women’s nature—which led it to desecrate and destroy it. There is no reverence for our home when corporations control and destroy our environment. It’s time to take back our home. We can do this by re-connecting with Earth’s energy grid and listening to Nature to guide us in our next steps.
Neptune in Pisces sextiles this potent Taurus New Moon, bringing us many opportunities to use our imaginations to enhance our life. Neptune also connects us with Chiron and Venus in Pisces, adding healing and compassion to our interactions with others. Venus forms a creative, favorable trine with Saturn in Scorpio, helping us heal old relationship wounds through understanding and compassion.
May the beauty and joy of this season fill you with new visions for our common future.
